What is classed as working at height?

Falling from one level to a lower level is classified as a fall from height. Therefore, working at height involves work from above ground or floor level, including work where you could fall from an edge or fragile surface, and through an opening or hole in the floor.

To comply with the Work at Height Regulations 2005, anyone working at height needs to be able to prove they can competently and safely work at height. Therefore, people working at height, as well as employers and people who control work at height, should complete a working at height course.

 

What are the most common causes of accidents when working at height?

High-risk work at height includes working on roofs, falls through or from a fragile roof which can be fatal. Parts or types of roof that may be fragile include: slates; tiles; roof lights; corroded metal sheets; glass; and rotted chipboard.
