WHAT IS A CANNULA AND CANNULATION?

A cannula is a small, flexible hollow tube that is inserted into a vein to place fluids that are unable to be taken by mouth, or that need to enter your bloodstream directly. This can include blood, antibiotics or medication. This technique is known as cannulation.

 

Is venepuncture the same as cannulation?

Cannulation is the procedure of inserting a small tube (a cannula) into a peripheral vein and can be used for the administration of fluids and medication.

 

Whereas, Venepuncture is inserting a needle into the peripheral veins, for the purpose of aspirating blood.
