What is fall prevention?

Fall prevention refers to when action is taken to help prevent accidental falls suffered by vulnerable people such as the elderly. It entails identifying risks and implementing processes to reduce the likelihood of injury occurring.

Fall prevention is important to maintain health, well-being and independence among the elderly. If risks are not monitored properly and a fall occurs, it can cause injuries ranging from bruises to broken bones and even mental or emotional trauma for the older person.

How can I prevent falls in the elderly?

Putting proactive measures in place and ensuring your staff are trained with the correct knowledge are important to preventing falls for the elderly in your care home or nursing home.

It’s best to assess each individual’s risk of falling in order to know what measures should be taken – every person is an individual, and may be at a higher risk of sustaining a more serious injury should they fall. For instance, you may need to consider if they have a weakness in their bones and therefore, may fall easier or break a bone if they fall. Another factor to consider is whether they have any visual or auditory impairments. If they do, you may want to ensure they get their sight or hearing tested regularly. By identifying the risk factors, a personalised fall care plan can be created and actioned.
