What is Food Safety Level 2?

Level 2 Food Safety is a course that teaches food handlers the skills and knowledge to handle, prepare and serve food safely. As a business, it is your responsibility for safeguarding the health of your consumers and ensure your food is safe to sell. By law, food businesses should ensure food handlers receive the appropriate training in food hygiene.

Our Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene course covers up-to-date food safety legislation, the correct way to store food, avoid food contamination, food preparation, and much more.

How long does a Food Safety Level 2 Certificate Last?

A Level 2 Food Safety Certificate doesn’t have an expiry date, but it is recommended by Environmental Health Officers that your food hygiene refresher training is completed regularly.

You may be thinking, why do I need to renew my certificate if it doesn’t expire?

For the sake of your business, could you be comfortable saying that your staff have up-to-date food safety knowledge after three or five years? If there’s a change in food hygiene practices and law, it’s best, and safer, to ensure your staff know it. It’s even more important when it comes to the health and safety of your consumers.

Who needs Food Hygiene Level 2?

Anyone that prepares, cooks or handles food needs a Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety training course, including if your employees work in:

– restaurants, pubs, hotels

– food and drink manufacturers

– care homes

– supermarkets

– retail environments e.g. delis, bakeries, coffee shops that sell food

– hospitals

– schools and nurseries

– prisons

If you are a manager of any of the above, our Level 3 Award in Food Safety is a better course for you.

What are the 4 C’s of good food hygiene?

The 4 C’s of good food hygiene are 4 simple rules to help keep the kitchen safe from food-borne illnesses:

– Cleaning – ensuring your surfaces, utensils and hands are thoroughly clean, especially after handling raw meat, poultry and fish.

– Cooking – ensuring cooking times and temperatures are followed correctly.

– Cross-contamination – keeping raw and cooked food separate at all times.

– Chilling – ensuring your food is chilled correctly.

Our online Food Safety Level 2 Awareness course covers these in much more depth and detail.

What is the difference between food safety and food hygiene?

Although they do overlap, there are differences between food safety and hygiene. Food safety covers important practices businesses must follow to ensure that food is safe to eat.

Whereas, food hygiene is just one key area of food safety. It ensures businesses follow hygiene practices, so the consumer doesn’t get a foodborne illness.
